Lesson 6 – How to play a game of chess – starting to think about the three phases (opening, middlegame and endgame)

This is fantastic! Your little chess player is already zooming ahead, learning the pieces and even some secret tactics. Now, let’s look at the whole chess game like a grand adventure with three exciting parts, or “phases”!

Imagine a chess game isn’t just one big battle, but like a three-act play or a three-part quest! Each part has its own goals and special things to think about.

Act 1: The Opening (The “Getting Ready” or “Setting Sail” Phase!)

Imagine this is the very beginning of your adventure! All your pieces are lined up neatly, like soldiers in their barracks or pirates on their ship, ready to set sail.

  • What it is: The first few moves of the game, when you’re getting your pieces off their starting squares.
  • How long it lasts: Usually about 5 to 10 moves for each player.

Your Missions in the Opening:

  1. Awaken Your Army!
    • Think: “Which of my pieces are still asleep? How can I get them off their starting squares and into the fight?”
    • How to do it: Move your Pawns in the middle (usually the ones in front of your King and Queen) one or two squares. This opens doors for your Bishops and Queen! Then, bring out your Knights (they love to jump!) and your Bishops (they love diagonals!). Try not to move the same piece twice unless you have a super good reason!
  2. Grab the Middle!
    • Think: “The center of the board is like the treasure island! Can I put my Pawns or pieces there to control it?”
    • How to do it: Try to get your Pawns onto those important middle squares (d4 and e4 for White, d5 and e5 for Black). Then use your Knights and Bishops to support those Pawns. Pieces in the middle have more power!
  3. Hide Your King! (Castling!)
    • Think: “My King is the most important treasure! How can I get him to a safe, cozy spot?”
    • How to do it: As soon as you can, do that special “Castling” move with your King and one of your Rooks. It tucks your King away behind a wall of Pawns and brings your Rook into the action at the same time! It’s like building a secret fort for your King!

Fun Tip for the Opening: Think of your Pawns like little trail blazers, carving paths for your bigger, stronger pieces. Get your Knights and Bishops out before your Queen or Rooks – they need those paths open!

Act 2: The Middlegame (The “Big Battle” or “The Adventure Unfolds” Phase!)

This is where the real action happens! Your pieces are out, the board is buzzing, and exciting fights are breaking out everywhere. This is often the longest and most complex part of the game.

  • What it is: After the opening, when most of your pieces are developed and the fight for control of the board begins.
  • How long it lasts: This can be many, many moves!

Your Missions in the Middlegame:

  1. Attack and Defend!
    • Think: “What are my pieces attacking? What are they defending? Is my opponent attacking anything important?”
    • How to do it: Look for opportunities to capture enemy pieces, especially if you can win a more valuable piece for a less valuable one (like trading a Knight for a Bishop, or a Rook for a Queen!). But always remember to protect your own pieces from sneaky enemy attacks!
  2. Look for Tactics! (Your Secret Tricks!)
    • Think: “Can I use a ‘Fork,’ a ‘Pin,’ a ‘Skewer,’ or a ‘Discovered Attack’ right now?”
    • How to do it: Keep your eyes peeled for those special patterns you’ve learned. The middlegame is where tactics often pop up and can win you the game in a flash!
  3. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
    • Think: “Are my pieces working together? Can my Rook help my Queen? Can my Knight jump to defend my Bishop?”
    • How to do it: Don’t just move pieces one by one. Try to make them cooperate! Maybe your Rook backs up a Pawn, or your Knight defends a square your Bishop wants to land on. Pieces working together are much stronger!
  4. Find the Weak Spots!
    • Think: “Does my opponent have any Pawns that are stuck? Is their King looking a little exposed? Are any of their pieces unprotected?”
    • How to do it: Look for places where your opponent is weak. Maybe they have a Pawn that can’t be defended, or a square near their King that you can sneak into. Attack those weaknesses!

Fun Tip for the Middlegame: Imagine your pieces are a super-team, working together to achieve a goal. Don’t be afraid to make plans, but always be ready to change them if your opponent does something surprising!

Act 3: The Endgame (The “Finishing Strong” or “The Grand Finale” Phase!)

This is the end of the game, where most of the pieces have been captured, and only a few are left. It might seem quiet, but it’s super important! This is where you bring your King out to help, and those little Pawns can become superstars!

  • What it is: The part of the game when there are very few pieces left on the board (usually just Kings, Pawns, and maybe one or two Rooks, Queens, or Bishops).
  • How long it lasts: Can be short or long, depending on how many pieces are left.

Your Missions in the Endgame:

  1. King to the Rescue!
    • Think: “My King used to hide, but now he’s a hero! How can I use him to help win?”
    • How to do it: In the endgame, your King is no longer in danger from lots of pieces. He becomes a powerful fighting piece! Use him to help push Pawns, block enemy Pawns, or even attack enemy pieces.
  2. Pawn Power! (The Promotion Dream!)
    • Think: “Can my little Pawns march all the way to the other side and become a Queen?”
    • How to do it: Pawns are super important in the endgame! Try to push your Pawns forward. If one of them reaches the very last row, Pop! It becomes a mighty Queen (or another strong piece)! Getting a new Queen is usually how you win in the endgame.
  3. Cooperate to Checkmate!
    • Think: “How can I use my remaining pieces (like a Rook and a King) to trap their King and say ‘Checkmate!’?”
    • How to do it: Practice how to checkmate with just a few pieces. For example, a King and a Rook can often checkmate an enemy King by pushing it to the edge of the board.

Fun Tip for the Endgame: Remember that even one little Pawn can become a Queen and win the game! Your King becomes a superhero, and your Pawns are like tiny champions racing for glory!

So, chess is like a big story!

  • In the Opening, you’re setting the stage and getting your heroes ready.
  • In the Middlegame, it’s the main adventure with battles and clever tricks.
  • In the Endgame, it’s the grand finale, where every piece, especially your Pawns and King, matters for the final win!

Keep thinking about these three parts, and you’ll become an even more amazing chess player! Have fun on your chess adventures!
