Castling
A special move where the king moves two squares towards a rook, and the rook moves to the square the king crossed. It’s like hiding your king behind a wall and bringing a rook into the game!
Check
When your king is attacked by an opponent’s piece. You must get out of check immediately!
Checkmate
When your king is in check and there’s no way to escape. Game over, you win!
Development
Moving your pieces (knights, bishops, rooks, queen) from their starting squares to active squares where they can help control the board.
FEN (Forsyth-Edwards Notation)
A special code that describes a chess board position. It tells you where all the pieces are, whose turn it is, and other important stuff!
Gambit
An opening where one player offers a pawn (or sometimes a piece) to gain an advantage, like faster development or central control.
Opening
The first few moves of a chess game where players try to develop their pieces, control the center, and keep their king safe.
Pawn Structure
The way the pawns are arranged on the board. It’s super important for how the game will play out!
Stalemate
When it’s a player’s turn to move, but they have no legal moves, and their king is NOT in check. It’s a draw!
Tactics
Short-term combinations of moves that lead to a direct gain, like winning a piece or delivering checkmate.
Variation
A specific sequence of moves within a chess opening. Openings often have many different variations!
